MariElders is throwing a 1950s and 1960s-themed Homecoming Party on Nov. 5 to celebrate 49 years of serving older adults in the Mariemont area.
The party will feature music, dancing, games, cold drinks and the crowning of a Homecoming King and Queen, according to the organization's November newsletter. Admission is $5. Registration closes Nov. 3.
The senior activity center at 6923 Madisonville Road, near the Mariemont square, has served adults 55 and older since it opened Nov. 2, 1977. It grew out of a 1976 Kiwanis Club of Mariemont presentation by Jane Carothers, then director of the Hyde Park Center for Older Adults. Harmon Wilson, president of the Mariemont Village Assembly, suggested creating a similar program in Mariemont, according to the organization's history page.
Executive Director Erin Rothfuss wrote in the November newsletter that the organization is reflecting with gratitude on the members, volunteers, donors and community partners who built MariElders over nearly five decades. With the 50th anniversary one year away, Rothfuss said the center is focused on building a strong future.
The celebration comes as MariElders works to close a $6,700 gap in its roof-replacement fund. Donations from members and the Cincinnati Foundation for the Aged have covered much of the project's cost, but MariElders said in its November newsletter that it still needs the remaining amount to stay dry.
The center is funded through a Village of Mariemont property tax levy, the Older Americans Act through the Council on Aging of Southwestern Ohio, and contributions from local businesses and individuals. Mariemont voters approved what became Ohio's first senior-center levy in 1978.
