The Anderson Township Senior Center is inviting residents to see a decade's worth of growth firsthand at a free open house on Wednesday, Sept. 16.

Admission is free.

The "Cheers to 10 Years!" event runs from 4 to 6 p.m. at the center, 7970 Beechmont Ave., behind Anderson Township Fire Station #6. The drop-in format lets visitors tour the facility, learn about programming and meet staff without a formal commitment.

The milestone marks roughly 10 years since the Anderson Township Board of Trustees assumed responsibility for the center, which serves adults 50 and older. Since then, daily attendance has climbed and the center has expanded its offerings to include fitness classes, history lectures, book clubs, educational programs and dancing, according to a township announcement written by assistant township administrator for operations Steve Sievers.

Sievers wrote that members are interested and active in classes and programs, and that participants have noted the center's role in helping people meet neighbors and avoid isolation.

The trustees have continued investing in the facility. On April 16, the board unanimously authorized bidding for a new Senior Center Pavilion Project, with trustees Dee Stone, Katie Nappi and Tom Hodges all voting yes, according to meeting minutes. Trustee Hodges said at that meeting he had heard excitement about the pavilion during a visit to the center. The contract award appeared on the board's July 16 agenda.

Longtime volunteer Steve Long captured the center's evolution in the township's August 2022 newsletter: "What I'm feeling more and more all the time is a sense of community at the center. There has always been some of that, but it seems more of a characteristic of what is going on at the senior center now."

Membership costs $15 for a single resident or $25 per couple. The center sits on the township's 6.5-acre operations campus on Beechmont Avenue, which also houses the fire station, the Hamilton County Sheriff's District 5 substation, a public works garage and the township's 24/7 Recycling Center.
