A bystander jumped into the Ohio River on Wednesday, Aug. 12, and pulled a woman from a sinking vehicle near the Anderson Ferry boat ramp before Cincinnati firefighters could reach the scene.

The woman's car entered the river and floated 50 to 75 yards from shore, according to Local 12, citing Cincinnati Fire Department officials. The unidentified civilian swam to the vehicle, opened the rear liftgate and freed the woman from inside.

Cincinnati Fire Department Engine 37 and Boat 3 responded to the call. By the time crews arrived, both the woman and her rescuer were safely on shore.

The woman was transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The bystander was not hurt.

Car remains submerged

The vehicle is still in the Ohio River. A CFD dive team will assist with its removal once weather conditions improve, according to Fox 19, citing fire officials. A flood watch was in effect through 11 p.m. Wednesday for the greater Cincinnati area, with heavy rain causing flooding conditions along the river.

Officials have not disclosed what caused the vehicle to enter the water. The Cincinnati Fire Department has not released the identities of the woman or the bystander. The Hamilton County Sheriff's Office, which patrols Anderson Township, has not publicly commented on the incident.
