Seven different Spartans found the back of the net on Aug. 14 as Turpin boys soccer steamrolled Batavia 7-0 in the season opener at Spartan Stadium.

The blowout was the first competitive game on the brand-new turf field at Turpin High School, installed by The Motz Group and completed in late July. The girls' team had already broken in the surface with a victory of their own earlier in the evening, giving the Spartans a perfect double-header to launch the fall season.

Turpin started slow, according to the team's Instagram recap, but once the Spartans settled in, the floodgates opened. Samuel Harding scored first, followed by goals from Brandhorst, Austin Harding, Santiago Sanchez Mendoza and Nolan Roddy. Xavier Asbury capped the rout with two goals of his own.

Goalkeeper Kelley needed just three saves to record the shutout.

"After a slow start they settled in to get the result!" Jamie Harloff wrote on the team's Instagram account after the match, calling it a "great way to start the season for the guys."

The girls' varsity kicked off the double-header at 6 p.m., with Schmitz and Vortkamp scoring the first two goals ever on the new turf to give Turpin a 2-0 halftime lead over Batavia. The boys followed at 8 p.m. and never looked back.

The new surface, branded the "GAME ON" field, arrives during Turpin High School's 50th anniversary year. The Motz Group, which installed the turf, described the field as the program's "12th man" in a July 31 Facebook post announcing the project's completion.

Six players scored once and Asbury added a second, giving head coach and staff plenty of options as conference play approaches. The depth on display suggests the Spartans could be a handful for Eastern Cincinnati Conference opponents this fall.

Turpin opens ECC play Saturday, Aug. 22, when the Spartans host Kings.
