Mariemont Branch Library will host a free hands-on genealogy session Monday, Sept. 14, at 6:30 p.m., the first in a fall series of family history programming from the Cincinnati & Hamilton County Public Library.

The one-hour session, titled "Newspaper Databases for Genealogical Research," will walk attendees through the library's magazine and newspaper databases. Participants can search for relatives' death dates, track down old local newspaper coverage of family members and learn search techniques for digging into their heritage.

The Mariemont Branch is at 3810 Pocahontas Ave.

The Sept. 14 event is free. The library offers a suite of genealogy tools at no cost to cardholders, including Ancestry Library Edition, Heritage Quest, Find My Past, FamilySearch, Fold3, the Cincinnati Enquirer Digital Archive and the Cincinnati Post Digital Archive covering 1882 through 1969.

Jessie Ludwig, a library customer specialist who wrote about the programming series on the library's blog, said the databases helped her uncover her own family's story. "Using our Ancestry Database and local history books, I learned that my Great Grandfather John Ludwig helped to maintain the land that would become 5 Way Park in Delhi Township in the early 1900s," Ludwig wrote. Census records showed he served as the town constable for 32 years and as a groundskeeper for local cemeteries.

October is National Family History Month, and the library has several more events planned. On Saturday, Oct. 3, the Genealogy and Local History Department and the Hamilton County Genealogical Society will co-host a "Day with the Experts" at the Downtown Main Library, 800 Vine St., from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Representatives from genealogical and historical societies, lineage societies and public record offices across Southwest Ohio and Northern Kentucky will be on hand. Library staff will lead tours of the Genealogy and Local History Department at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m.

Later in October, the library will host an after-hours Genealogy Lock-In at the Downtown Main Library on Saturday, Oct. 24. Registrants can enter between 6:30 and 7 p.m. and stay until 11:30 p.m.

A Nov. 14 session at the Downtown Main Library will introduce the library's genealogy resources and include a tour of the South Building's second floor, where all genealogy and local history materials are housed.
